For some reason, we don’t think that certain things can happen to our children. Even when we hear the news first hand, there must be a mistake. If your child is depressed, it is not the time to be in denial but in agreement on how to help them.

Children are not immune to depression. They experience a certain amount of life pressure as well. What happens in the household that affects you can also affect them.

Your child may take it hard when they find out that they are suffering from depression. The best thing you can do at this point is probably just to listen to the doctor and get as much information as you can. Your child may not even want to discuss it at that point, but when they do, be ready to listen.

For your part, find out all that you can about depression. Even if you know a little information, you almost certainly don’t know it all. Now that you are dealing with it, it is time to educate yourself. The more that you know, the more you can help your child and other family members to cope.

Don’t blame yourself. Even though a family member with the condition increases the risk for others, there is no way that you could have caused your child to become depressed. When you accept that fact, it will make it easier for them to accept that it not their fault either.

Join a support group for family members of those with depression. It can be an actual local group or an online forum. The group can help you to understand your feelings.

Your child will need your assistance to stay motivated. Knowing you may have to take medication or attend therapy can be a big step for a young person. Resist the urge to enable them when they want to give up on themselves and their treatment.

Being a parent is not easy and neither is dealing with a child who suffers from depression. The best thing you can do for them is to be supportive.
