Depression: Your Secret Saboteur
Let’s be honest—no one wants to be depressed. But for a lot of people, it’s something they live with every day. You reach out for help, you start treatment, you’re doing “all the right things”… and yet, something still feels off. Progress stalls. Or worse, you start slipping backward.
And when that happens, it can be really confusing.
You know those old spy movies where the hero is doing everything right, but there’s a hidden traitor quietly working against them? Someone nobody suspects? When they’re finally revealed, it’s shocking—and suddenly everything makes sense.
Depression can work the same way.
You might have a real goal: I just want to feel better. I want my life back. But sometimes, there’s a secret saboteur hanging around in the background, ready to knock things over just when things start improving.
And here’s the part most people don’t expect.
That saboteur… can be you.
I know—that’s not easy to hear. Most people are shocked when they realize it. But it’s actually very common.
Here’s how it often plays out. You’re diagnosed with depression. Your doctor prescribes medication. Maybe you start therapy. Slowly, things begin to lift. You have more energy. You feel lighter. Other people notice the change and start commenting—“You seem so much better!”
And then… something shifts.
You skip a therapy session. You stop taking your medication. You tell yourself, I don’t really need this anymore. Before you know it, you’re sliding back into old patterns.
This isn’t laziness or self-sabotage for the sake of it. It’s something called fear of success—and it’s just as real as fear of failure.
When you start climbing out of that dark place, there’s suddenly pressure. Pressure to keep improving. To stay well. To meet expectations—yours and everyone else’s. That pressure can feel overwhelming, and without realizing it, your mind pulls you back toward what feels familiar, even if it hurts.
If you notice that stress creeping in, talk about it. Bring it up with your therapist. That’s exactly what they’re there for—to help you understand these fears and learn how to handle them without undoing all the progress you’ve made.
You’ve fought too hard and come too far to let that secret saboteur steal your win.
You deserve your recovery—and you don’t have to face it alone.
