What does Chronic Depressive Really Mean?
When a depression lasts for two years or more, it normally finds itself classified as chronic depression or a chronic depressive disorder. This condition either never subsides over this long period of time, or can come and go. It may not be a severe depression, but it’s depression none the less.
This type of depression is often treated with medication, especially after other therapies have been tried and have to give the desired result. Some therapies which may have been tried by a therapist are behavioral, cognitive or even group therapy. The prescription of medication is normally the last choice in any treatment plan.
When the patient doesn’t respond to any of the above-mentioned approaches, the need of an anti-depressant becomes necessary. This doesn’t mean the other therapy options aren’t continued however. They may simply be paired with a medicinal supplement for a short period of time. It’s only in severe cases you will find the permanent need for prescription drugs as a solution.
The symptoms of chronic depression or dysthymia include the inability to concentrate, a constant feeling of guilt surrounding the various aspects of your life, low self esteem and possibly even suicidal thoughts.
This type of depression is long lasting, and an ongoing condition. It’s possible that a person suffering from chronic depression has these feelings every day for a number of years. While there are no extreme “rollercoaster” type emotions as you find in other types of depression, there is definitely a lack of happiness or contentment in the patient’s life. This coupled with feelings of inadequacy can hold a person back from many positive experiences which their life could potentially provide them with.
Chronic depressive disorder is not as debilitating as other more severe forms of depression, but it’s just as real a condition, especially to the patient. If any of the symptoms described here are related to feelings you have yourself, or perhaps someone you know, it’s best to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
